CREATION OF POSITION OF PATRON

Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi is pleased to announce that former Scottish international player, Pat Nevin, has agreed to be Patron of the Charity. 

CONCERT FOR Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi

A benefit concert was given by Rise and Doug.  While this event could have been better attended, it raised £2,500 with the proceeds for the auction and the sponsorship of Doug Veitch valiant efforts in completing the Edinburgh Marathon.

DONATION BY THE CELTIC CHARITY FOUNDATION

In February 2009, the Celtic Charity Foundation announced that it was giving a grant of £3,000, its maximum, to the Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi. This money will be used solely for another 370 children to go to PLAY SOCCER Malawi for a whole year.

DONATION OF MATERIAL BY RANGERS

Rangers have recently donated many unused boys and youths kits (Rangers Charity Foundation has one international partner - UNICEF.)

DONATION OF KITS BY GLASGOW CELTIC

Glasgow Celtic announced at Christmas 2007 that the club was Celtic donating “hundreds of strips” to Glasgow’s Lord Provost on the benefit of PLAY SOCCER Malawi. After discussion with the family, Celtic also donated the strips left at Celtic Park in tribute to Phil O’Donnell to PLAY SOCCER Malawi.  These Celtic kits have arrived in Blantyre and the Management has sent us these photographs.

PARTNERSHIP WITH MALAWI FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL

In 2008, PLAY SOCCER Malawi had a partnership with Malaria Foundation International. They taught the children techniques to prevent being bitten and therefore infected, e.g. covering swamp areas with soil. The Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi organized a “ceilidh”.  The event raised enough to buy 700 mosquito nets at Malawi prices.

In October 2008, the Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi were granted Charitable Status by the Scottish Charities Regulator.  Charitable Status. Registered Charity Number is SCO39953.

SOME UNFORTUNATE NEWS

The Scottish Goverment has decided, in its wisdom, to withdraw the funding of the containers sent by Glasgow Council, so no more strips/footballs going to PLAY SOCCER Malawi free of freight charges - unless Glasgow Council can find alternative sources of funding, but that's not easy in the current financial climate.

ARRIVAL IN BLANTYRE OF KITS DONATED BY EDINBURGH FOOTBALL TEAMS

The Friends of PLAY SOCCER Malawi are delighted to share two of the photographs we received from Patricio Kulemeka, Programme Director.

We offer our sincere thanks for Edinburgh Council Sports Department who assisted in the collection and Glasgow Lord Provost’s International Office who facilitated the shipping.

DONATION OF A SECOND BORE-HOLE IN NDIRANDE

As the groundwater is too contaminated for shallow wells in Ndirande there was no source of clean water before 2007 when the Q Fund donated a borehole.  There was such demand for clean water that a long queue formed before day-break.

After a visit to the PLAY SOCCER Malawi site in 2007, representatives of Glasgow Council were so impressed that they asked the Lord Provost to pay for a second bore-hole in Ndirande.  This was completed in February 2008
